About Cura Studios

What to expect

When you take a class with me, you're in for some mad drawing skills based on century old wisdom, without reverting into a Gutenberg Press in the process.

Say what?!

Simply put, here you’ll learn time-proven, classical drawing skills, used by the old masters, without pretending like we’re still living in Renaissance Italy ourselves. Meaning, that we won't cling to "traditional" methods for the sake of being traditional. Instead we'll study the beneficial insights behind traditional methods so we can use them in a contemporary context.

And speaking of printing presses, when you learn to draw with me I’ll teach you how to “really” draw, not just how to “copy”, be it from a photo, a live model or someone else’s design.

Wait, how can you draw without copying? Isn’t copying what drawing is?

No, not really. Copying is what we do when we make the kind of marks  that EXACTLY mimic what we see, but leave us clueless about what the artist’s experience or point of view is.

It’s kinda like telling someone you’ll cook dinner for them and then dumping all the raw ingredients right in front of them. They won’t know what dish you had in mind, what flavors you enjoy in these ingredients, nor will they get to enjoy the beautiful and considerate presentation of a well-cooked meal. Copying is the equivalent of saying :”Cook your own meal. I’m outta here!

Good artists don't do that 😉

"So what exactly will I be able to do when I take a Cura Studios class?"

What won’t you be able to do would be the better question. You’ll learn the fundamental principles of drawing, and once you got ‘em under your belt you are truly free to express YOUR ideas and visions. You’ll finally be able to capture your life and express your internal images in exactly the way you’ve always dreamed of.

"You said classical, does that mean antiquated and boring?"

Don’t worry, just because I say classical that doesn't mean lessons will be stiff and punitive.

Yes, some of them will be technical, but that’s because good technique leads to freedom not to thwarted creativity. I also deliver lessons in a way so they'll connect with your everyday lingo and your desires for being more creative. You won't be asked to wear a smock and beret (unless that’s your jam).

The meaning of CURA

The word cura is a latin root stem and means

“to make better by looking carefully” (like what you do when you cure someone, or curate a show).

I picked it because I believe that when we take the time to look carefully at our life around us, and our inner images (which is what you do when we draw) it changes everything for the better. Care and attention are the magical, free antidote to feeling disconnected from our life, and drawing is the best way I know of, to put them right to work. Wanna try it? Check out my upcoming classes!

"Alright, who's behind Cura Studios? And can they deliver on this promise?"

I daresay I can!

Hi, my name is Carolin Peters, and I’ve been teaching drawing and painting at art schools in SoCal for more than 10 years. I'm classically trained and studied at one of the few accredited art colleges that focus on traditional, figurative drawing and painting. I specialize in teaching methodical processes that clarify exactly how to get a certain result, without producing an army of teacher’s clones.

Schools I’ve taught at include Laguna College of Art and Design, SoA at CSULB, and multiple community colleges. You can see my personal work over here, but don’t go thinking that your work will end up looking like my work.

I won’t teach you what to create, just how to "do YOU" better.

The Cura Studios Philosophy in a nutshell

  • We believe drawing is good for us and that we can find creative freedom by learning how to draw well.
  •  Technical skill is the bedrock of true freedom to express whatever it is you want to express.
  • Style should never become an excuse for not knowing how to draw something well.
  • Teaching should provide processes that can lead you to YOUR own voice, instead of producing a teacher’s clone.
  • True skill isn't an easy hack but hard-earned through commitment and dedication.
  • When we observe life carefully it gets better.
  • Observational drawing fuels imagination.
  • As creatives we are never “finished”. Growth only stops when we decide that we have arrived.
  • Perfectionism won't be our excuse for not getting things done.

We know that "Art is a Practice" and keep coming back day after day.
